I had 21 new little love bugs today and they were as sweet as could be! I am soooo excited about this school year, although I feel like I could sleep for about 2 days straight I am so tired. We had open house on Sunday afternoon, followed by night before first day jitters (that yes, the teacher still gets), and a whole day teaching rules and how we do EVERYTHING (along with some fun & games)! I remembered my camera yesterday before open house and had a few minutes to snap a couple pictures of my room and the adorable bulletin boards on our first grade hall. Now it is time to snuggle up and rest up for day 2! Enjoy! I'll post in detail about setup and my room in a future post :)
My guided reading station...aka...the reading hub...aka....Mrs. Mabe's grand central station! My mom is uh-mazing! She made table skirts for our first grade team (my curtains match too..love it).

Okay, so kindergarten at my school all has a specific jungle animal theme. Since k/1 share a hall, I didn't want to have a jungle animal on my door and I was stumped as to what to put on my door. Then I ran across this absolutely adorable, perfect idea for my room (from first grade fever's blog...check it out here) that combined two of my favorite things....animal print & Pete the Cat! Pete may have to stay up for a while and just get decorated for fall because I love him so much!

My writing table at the back of the room...missing two caddies on the Ikea hanging bar thing. Ikea has great stuff & so cheap! Alright, my mom sews & my wonderful hubby is handy with a saw & drill. He made these shelves for my classroom library. Low enough for kids to reach all the shelves and also for me to see into the library from my guided reading table. A dear kindergarten friend shared the palm tree base with me that she had stored away from VBS years ago. My mom and I whipped up a lovely little palm tree, following Deanna Jump's directions for the one she has in her room.

It replaced my prize box this year *AMEN* and my firsties LOVED it. I loved it too, but as with anything, it needed a little *tweeking* to make it just right for what I needed. My problem this year was keeping up with who had earned their trip to the behavior catalog and when. My firsties have a behavior calendar in their homework folder that is color coded based on the day they had. BUT, it meant they or I had to count up their days. To earn a trip to the behavior catalog they had to have 8 good days (not consecutive, but all together). So.....this year after doing a little blog researching and my favorite Pinterest, I figured out what I am missing to make my life easier. I am going to use a punch card system this year and when students earn 8 punches, they can go to the behavior catalog. And let me say, the world stoppped in first grade when we went shopping in that catalog last year. Even though they usually knew what they wanted (stinky feet was always a favorite), they had to browse the catalog just to make sure. :-) I will be posting pics later today of the punch cards and they can be downloaded FREE. I also wanted to revamp some of my catalog, so it now has a new look with the adorable KPM Doodles clipart.
Above are some of the new images of my behavior catalog. I also revamped some of my choices and am up to 27 choices for my firsties to choose from! (And almost all free to me, no treasure box!!) To further organize myself and my firsties in my never ending battle at organization, I have created reward coupons that match the behavior catalog choices. See below. After punch card is full, shopping in catalog is complete, they will receive a reward coupon for the prize they chose. Two reasons for this - They can hang on to it and redeem it when they want. Sometimes this year they wanted to do stinky feet, but wanted to do stinky feet with a friend who hadn't yet earned their trip to the catalog. This way they can wait until they are absolutely ready to use it. Second, I can put it in their homework folder to go home to show their parents the prize they earned. They will be laminated. Another idea is to use them in the clear name tag necklaces to wear when they use their coupon.
I ventured into my classroom today with
my 2 year old. I actually managed to get quite a bit unpacked and put
away with him playing with his cars and trucks and wanting to take out
magnadoodles, blocks, markers, books, everything!!! I am excited beyond
words to be moving into a bigger classroom. My wheels were turning
today as I pictured where I wanted everything to go. Especially my word
work center because I just finished wrapping up how it will be
organized this year.

I am going to print, laminate, and hole punch each task card. They will be held together with a ring. **Sorry, no pictures, haven't had time to put it together with a 2 year old running around**. I will create a separate set of task cards for each of my reading groups, based on ability. I plan on spending A LOT of time at the beginning introducing each task card along with expectations. I created recording sheets for some of the task cards. I actually think I will be using a word work journal this year to cut down on some copies. You can check out the task cards and recording sheets, from my TpT store. I would love to hear from you if you download them, along with any suggestions for more activities. Follow my TpT store for more fun stuff to come. What other awesome ideas to you have for word work??? Enjoy!
Now posted in my TpT store are Writing Center Task Cards. I wanted the set to be versatile for throughout the year. There are 132 task cards! WHOA!!! Some cards have writing topics on them like a rainy day, a time I was excited, the beach, my family, etc. There are topics for creating lists, recipes, newspapers, poems, and stories. I figured I would just knock them all out at once so I can pick and choose throughout the year. I think they will work great for an anchor chart bulletin board to give kiddos topics to write about, as well as being hole punched and on a ring in the writing center. Check it out in my TpT store!

Whew. Let me just say that these math vocabulary cards have been a labor of love! I started creating/working on them LAST SUMMER (ha) and have just put the finishing touches on them. I used a majority of these cards in my room this year on my math word wall. My district has adopted Common Core standards, so I have been adding more words that align with Common Core. My district provided picture cards for us to print and use, but can we say, colorless and b-o-r-i-n-g! I wanted something very simple and clean, but jazzed up in fun colors and clipart. Viola! Below is a preview of the end result. 104 vocabulary cards for a quick reference in your room. Click on the images to go check them out!

My last post {circa last August} was made from the beach while I was kicking back, relaxing, and enjoying my last little bit of summer before heading back to school {with a classroom I had already set-up, decorated, and cleaned, keep in mind}. That beach trip proved quite eventful, with me interviewing and taking a new position at a new school within a matter of days. I packed up my classroom and moved across town a WEEK BEFORE STARTING SCHOOL!! Needless to say, this year was a whirlwind with moving, settling, and adjusting, but I love my new school and teammates. My commute has been cut in half, which I absolutely love. I'm still in first grade. So between the ten bajillion things we do as teachers on a regular basis, I have also been enjoying time with my one {almost 2 year old} and the hubster. Life is good, God is great! So....with all that being said, I'M BACK and ready to rock a new year.

I'm working on a few things to share over the next few weeks, and of course finding great ideas on your blogs and my favorite, Pinterest! My room is lots of green and animal prints. I needed to update my number word posters, but didn't want anything too big. Viola....below is what I came up with. Set includes numbers 0-20, 30, 40, 50, 60 , 70, 80. 90 & 100. Click on the picture to download for free from my TpT store. Follow me on TpT for more fun stuff to come! Enjoy!
My little man will be accompanying me, so there's a good chance I will get very little accomplished. I'm at the beach all next week {YAY} but as soon as I return, it's workdays, trainings, & back to school! SOOOOOO I have to get my messy room ready.

All I can say is WOW and THANK YOU to all you awesome bloggers out there for sharing so many great ideas. Usually during my son's nap time, I hit up a couple blogs and work on things for school. It is so wonderful to have a network of teachers to share and inspire one another. Here are a few things I've adapted and recreated to work in my 'jungle/safari' room {all awesome ideas I came across on blogs this summer}. Click on each picture to download.

My absentee folder printables. I will make 2-3 folders to keep in the room and use when students are out. No more digging for missed work. What a great idea!

{idea from Mrs. Gilchrist's blog...see post here}

Bye-bye prize box! This idea came from Mrs. Cooley at First Grader....At Last! She created a notebook 'catalog' to replace her prizebox. Check out her blog above to read more about it. The thought of not having to buy more random toys, trinkets, and 'stuff' puts a big smile on my face and more $$$ in my pocket!! I created the following catalog to use in the room. I will use a 3-ring binder to hold the catalog choices. When students earn enough stickers for good behavior & making smart choices, they will get to choice a reward from the catalog. Click on any of the pictures to download a copy. Awesome idea Mrs. Cooley!!

I'm also wrapping up my math vocabulary picture cards this week too. They should be posted soon. Here's a sneak peek...Not quite finished, but will probably have close to 100 math words. In my district, we have to post our math words we are working on, then move them to a math 'word wall' to stay posted for the year.

My little man turned the big O-N-E over the weekend and we celebrated with a very hungry caterpillar themed cook-out. I found the cutest ideas online and 'recreated' them for our party. Here are a few pics of the decor and my handsome little man. The past year has flown by and I can't believe I'm a mommy to a one year old! It is by far the b-e-s-t job in the world. We read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and discuss how we are all different and unique. We complete this art project to showcase our names. I stumbled across it years ago (someone online, not sure where) and it always brightens up the halls! I cut up small pieces of construction paper in different colors and write students' names on a long piece of black paper. They cover their name with the construction paper squares. We learn this poem and add it to our poetry notebooks. Mrs. E. at The Sweet Life of Third Grade is hosting a classroom library show off linky party. Check it out and be sure to join in!

Quite possibly my favorite part of my room, the library with all those books! I organize my books by author/genre in blue/turquoise tubs that are all labeled. I'm in the process of updating them and switching to all green tubs for this year. I have one seperate shelf that holds all of my nonfiction books. Not pictured are 2 kid-size cute adirondack chairs and I have 4 fold-up kid chairs that students get out when in the reading center. If you're like me, even after teaching my students about our classroom library and how it is organized, now and then it inevitably has a small tornado whip through it. I always assign a few students the job of 'cleaning-up' and organizing the library. They love being in charge of this and showing students where books go. And it helps me keep it organized.

I also have Mr. Mabe in the process of 'making' shelves for me that will help hold more tubs. I have picked up a giraffe print rug from JC Penny on clearance (originally $100 on sale for $30) that will be in the library along with some green and animal print pillows. Not ready to go back to school, but getting excited about getting in there and decorating!
He has recently mastered walking and *tries* to get into everything! I am busy planning a very hungry caterpillar birthday party! So excited!! When little man decides to nap in the afternoon, I've been busy getting my room ready for a new jungle/safari theme. I LOVE decorating and am taking this on as my 'interior-decorating' project for the summer. Here are a few things I've been working on. I'm using animal print scrap book paper as a background for a lot of these. My room will be decked out in lime green & jungle animals!
They are one of my favorite things in the class to keep my students organized. Students are only 'allowed' to keep certain journals/notebooks in their pockets so they are easy to find when we need them. I am going to be ordering a set in animal print fabrics for back to school! :-) Classroom pics to come as the room gets set up :-)
Reason #1...I have the most awesome mom in the world!! She's the best! Reason #2...I'm a mommy that will be celebrating her FIRST Mother's Day! Woohooooo! Being a mommy is the 100%, hands-down, absolutely the best thing in the world! Reason #3...First graders LOVE their mommas and we have so much fun working on cards, crafts, and fun stuff for them! I've been loving all the mother's day ideas you've all been posting. I think I might attempt the Mother's Day plates with the kiddos next week that I saw on Teacher Bits and Bobs blog. Awesome! As I've been trying to figure out just what to do, I came up with this little project to work on in writing. We're going to be using "The Important Book" to use as a model for stories about our moms. We'll brainstorm important things about our moms and adjectives to describe our mommas. We'll wrap up our stories by publishing them in this little book to give to our moms. I'll be sure to post pics of the finished products and the art projects we create next week. Click on the book cover to see a copy of the book.

What other fun things do you have planned for Mother's Day in your class?

I found cute little wooden flowers (like 10 to a pack) from Dollar Tree. We'll be painting/glittering them up, adding a small picture of each kid to be in the center of the flower, and adding a magnet to the back for our moms to put on their fridges!

Today was our last day before Spring Break (woooooohoooooo) and all the first graders at our school came decked out in their 'Sunday Best' and we paraded and performed wearing our gorgeous spring hats. I got the idea several years ago from a coworker during my first year of teaching. Each year since the whole process evolves and grows. We start with newspaper, turn them into hats, and then decorate them. I like to say they look like an Easter basket on your head! We learned spring songs and poems and performed for our families and the rest of the school. Directions for how to make the hats can be found at http://www.kinderteacher.com/SpringHats.htm. Here are a few pics of our fun day!

1. My hubby, BJ, and 9 month old son, Carter. My two absolute favorite men eva!! Watching them play every evening and hearing laughs and giggles makes my day complete. I love being a mommy and wife!

2. Sleeping In ~ ahhhhhhhh, my bed & me snuggled up on a Saturday morning **sigh** doesn't happen too often with a 9 month old, so the mornings BJ takes Carter & I sleep in are lovely :-)
3. Target - I'm there at least twice a week, maybe more, just don't tell my hubby :-)
4. Blankets ~ I seriously have no less than 2 blankets per room in my house. That's what happens when your hubby likes sub-Arctic temperatures. A fuzzy, warm blanket + me = happiness!

5. Strawberries - So dang excited that it is almost strawberry season here in NC! Can't wait to take Carter to pick his first strawberries. Dip them in chocolate, sugar, whipped cream, no matter...I love me some strawberries!

6. My mom - Seriously, I wouldn't survive without her. I love talking to her DAILY (usually more than once) and spending time with her shopping, playing with mr. carter, or being crafty! She is the best

7. My Rainbow flip-flops. I live in them. I wear them summer, fall, winter, spring, no matter. Just wish I could wear them to school (I keep an extra pair *hidden* in my room to wear when the 'cute' shoes start to hurt).
(No Spring Break for me until next week...sooooo ready) I've come up with a literacy center for the monkey container. We will be working with the /oo/ sounds after break, so we'll be 'Goin' Bananas' to practice. Students will sort the bananas by the oo sound like in soon and the oo sound like in book. They will feed the monkey only the /oo/ words (like in 'book'). The bananas that make the /oo/ sound, like in soon, will be 'rotten' and the monkey can't eat them! Then students will record words on the tree map to show how they sorted the bananas. I use a Sound Muncher in my room weekly and these little guys will be used in the same way ~ to sort words for word study. This week, we worked with similes. We read the book, "Quiet as a Cricket" and learned how to write our own similes. I tell them I do not want 'baby-kindergarten' sentences, I want first grade sentences packed with details. And viola...they certainly don't want to be compared to kinders, so they rise to the challenge of making their writing more descriptive. We made these cute little simile books to help us remember what similes are. I gave them the words at the top of each page, like hot and fluffy and they had to come up with a simile comparing two things. They worked very hard and turned out great! I love it when they are excited to share their work with me and beg to take it home that day to show their mommas!! Here are a couple and I especially oh so l-o-v-e the volcano erupting one!
So I sat on the couch Thursday evening and tortured my hubby by making him guess the colors as I picked the ones I wanted to use on Friday. (He puts up with so much!! I love him!!) My favorites by far were razzmatazz and jazzberry jam...so fun to say! Friday to wrap up our writing, we did this fun little activity. We read the book, "The Crayon Box That Talked" first and had a little talk about the theme of the book.

Then on to the crayons! It tied in perfectly with our similes. Besides the random snow flurries we had in NC last Monday, we are loving warmer days, no coats on the playground, and all that wonderful sunshine!! And since I am a fan of all things cute, colorful, and creative, we've been 'blooming' in our classroom as well with spring activities. Check out some of our latest projects.
Our spelling words this week are the -ow spelling pattern and we will be reviewing the -ou sound as well. Firsties can have such a hard time with the -ou, whether it is the long o sound or /ou/ sound. Well, we are lovin' some ouchies in our room. I found this fabulous idea from Lindsey at The Teacher Wife. I introduced my poor, wounded, hurt clown letters today - the o and u. I gave my kids a long, drawn out story about what happened to them, how they got hurt, and of course what they keep on saying, "OW!!! That hurts!" I wore -ow band-aids all over me for the remainder of the day and when the kids would point to one, I gave them a sad face and said, "OW!" I especially loved the wack-a-doodle looks I got at buses, like, "what is this crazy lady up to now?!?!" We're going to continue with our ouchie clowns tomorrow and practice reading all our -ow and -ou words throughout the week. A quick stop at the dollar store tonight and now my firsties will be bandaged up with their -ow and -ou words the rest of the week.
